The March IFMA-CT Chapter meeting will be a tour of the Blake Group facility's energy efficiency features and presentations on the building and funding strategies for these technologies.

The Blake Group, a recognized leader in zero energy and sustainable building design, designed and constructed the first zero-energy industrial building in Connecticut. The 17,000 square foot multi-use building houses a corporate training center, fabrication center, offices and a warehouse and features equipment marketed and tested by Blake Equipment. Serving as a testing field for energy efficient technologies, The Blake Group installed multiple geo-exchange borehole strategies utilizing water source heat pumps that can be analyzed under various demand conditions. In addition, they also installed an LED lighting control system, triple glaze windows, high R-value insulation, thermally enhanced radiant tubing, solar thermal, an energy recovery ventilation unit and a rooftop photo-voltaic system that generates twice the building’s annual energy usage. Energize CT was able to provide support to The Blake Group through the new construction energy efficiency program by providing incentives for the lighting and HVAC system, and sharing the story of the first emerging zero-energy building in Eversource CT territory. By making energy efficiency and zero energy a primary goal from early design, The Blake Group is expected to save over 37,000 kWh annually, operating at a reduced heating load of 12 Btu/sf, and offsetting its additional energy demand through renewables. Furthermore, The Blake Group continues to learn from the equipment installed and tested, enhancing the services they provide as a manufacturer’s representative and distributor of water and thermal energy solutions.
